Story
"General Quarters, General Quarters! All hands to battle stations, now!"
Your voice blares back at you through the loudspeaker. Everyone is already up and moving. In your own ear, you sound steady. Calm. And you are. It's good, and slightly surprising, to find just how ready you feel.
It’s the same for your crew. They’re not panicking. No, they're up and moving, with precision and with purpose. They don’t know what kind of fleet the enemy has brought to their door. Neither do you, but still, you're ready.
We're all ready, and it's up to us to end this thing before it starts!
Objective
Find and reveal the enemy fleet in the map grid before they destroy your carrier group (at the bottom of the card).
You win when all enemy ships have been fully revealed.
You lose when all your ships have been destroyed.
HINT: There's no valor in recklessness. Pay attention to these hints for important intel that will help you prevail.
Instructions
Each turn, scratch off a square in the map grid. It may be empty, or you may reveal one of the following:
Hit
You hit an enemy ship. Good work!
HINT: Enemy ships never touch horizontally or vertically. (If they did, then you wouldn't be able to tell which ship had been hit, or where one ship ends and another begins.)
Missile
An enemy ship fires an anti-ship missile at one of your ships, specified by the text below the missile:
- D-1: Destroyer 1
- D-2: Destroyer 2
- D-3: Destroyer 3
- AIR: Aircraft carrier
- CRU: Missile cruiser
If the specified ship has already been destroyed, ignore this attack.
If your missile cruiser has not been destroyed and you have an unscratched anti-air missile, scratch off an anti-air missile and ignore this attack. If a ship is attacked and you can protect it by using an anti-air missile, you must.
Otherwise, destroy the specified ship by scratching it off.
HINT: Each missile is always adjacent to one or more enemy ships, horizontally or vertically.
Submarine
An enemy submarine infiltrates your carrier group and torpedoes your rightmost ship that has not been destroyed.
Destroy that ship by scratching it off. You may not use an anti-air missile to prevent a submarine attack.
HINT: The four spaces adjacent to a submarine are always empty (horizontally and vertically).
HINT: There are always exactly three submarines somewhere in the map grid.
Flight Missions
Remember that you have air power on your side. Look just below your carrier group (at the bottom of the card) to see which of your aircraft are ready to deploy.
Helicopter
If you still have at least one destroyer, then instead of taking a normal turn, you may scratch off its helicopter.
Then, starting at the edge of the map grid, scratch off a square. Continue scratching off one contiguous square at a time (horizontal or vertical, but not diagonal) until you reveal a missile or submarine. When you do, end the helicopter mission immediately, but ignore the missile or submarine that was revealed.
Strike-fighter
If you still have your aircraft carrier, then instead of taking a normal turn, you may scratch off a strike-fighter.
Then scratch off all eight squares surrounding a square that you have already scratched off (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally). Ignore any missiles or submarines that you reveal while scratching off these squares. If your strike-fighter mission includes a square that has already been scratched, skip it and continue scratching.
Enemy Ships
The enemy fleet consists of ten ships of varying sizes.
Use the checkboxes at the top of the card to keep track of which ships have been fully revealed.
Make sure that you are absolutely certain you have fully revealed a ship before you scratch it off. For example, a battlecruiser might look like a destroyer if you’ve only revealed three of its five hits.
Battlecruiser
There is one battlecruiser in the map grid, with five hits:
HINT: Battlecruisers are always completely within deep water (the seven green columns of the map grid).
Cruisers
There are two cruisers in the map grid, each with four hits:
HINT: One cruiser is always positioned horizontally, and one vertically.
Destroyers
There are three destroyers in the map grid, each with three hits:
Frigates
There are four frigates in the map grid, each with two hits:
HINT: Frigates are always completely within shallow water (the three blue columns of the map grid).
Scoring
When you win the game, your score is based on the number of ships you have remaining:
- 5 ships – Admiral
- 4 ships – Captain
- 3 ships – Commander
- 2 ships – Lieutenant
- 1 ship – Ensign
