JOB POSTING: 2D GAME ARTIST

Coincidence is a small (~6 person) cooperative game studio located in Redmond, WA. We all worked at Zachtronics before this, where we made lots of puzzle games (like Opus Magnum) and a few non-puzzle games (like Eliza).

We currently have two artists, both 2D generalists, and are looking for a third to join the team.

ABOUT YOU

The most important thing to understand about our games is that they’re almost entirely UI:

We also tend to include a lot of illustrations in our games, which often include characters:

You should be able to create assets like these from concept to completion. (This is the job.)

Other things that we do, but in smaller amounts, that you might also be good at: animation, graphic design, motion graphics, and tabletop game art. We once even made a stop-motion trailer for one of our games.

You should live somewhere near Redmond, WA so that you can come into our office at least once a week. Most of us are here 4-5 days a week, which is preferred.

ABOUT US

This is not a normal job posting, because Coincidence is not a normal game studio.

100% REV-SHARE: No one here takes a salary. Instead, we work on projects and split the revenue based on who participated and how much work was involved. Our current projects are funded by a publisher, so we have money coming in during development, but this is not always true. If it’s any consolation, programmers and non-programmers generally receive similar percentages. We each typically make about $100k/year.

PROJECT-BASED: We’re looking for someone to work with us on projects full-time, but the work we do is fundamentally project-based. Most of us work normal 40-hour weeks, but not everyone works on every project, and some people work less than full-time. We have a few projects in the pipeline at this time and are currently bottlenecked by artwork, so there’s plenty of art to be done.

CONTRACT-BASED: Anyone hired as a result of this listing would probably be as a contractor, not an employee, because we don’t have any non-owner employees at this time. Depending on your needs (taxes, health insurance, etc.) we can talk about making an exception.

The structure of Coincidence is unusual. I will be happy to talk it through with anyone who is interested and seems like a plausible candidate.
